    By The Sea

As its waves undulate across the planet’s coastlines, and sea foam laps the shore, the ocean offers a lesson in organic movement – untamed, and a continual source of inspiration. Yet, mankind’s relationship with the ocean threatens to clog the world’s waterways – with waste and pollutants that destabilize the fragile ecosystem below.

By the Sea explores the relationship between humans and the ocean through dance – an ode to the majesty of our waters, and our responsibility to protect them. Set to violinist Anna Phoebe’s hymn to the sea, featuring the ethereal Trans Voices choir, two dancers intertwine at the water’s edge, tumbling across the sand towards the waves. Turning and weaving through one another and the water, the dancers are transformed to become a part of the swell.

Shot over two days on the south coast of England, Arnold, along with cinematographer Ben Williams and co-director Sean Flanangan battled the waves to capture the supreme power of the water under an imposing storm.

Ben says “Near the end of the film we decided to shoot in the sea. It was a real battle against the waves, not just for the dancers but I was also being pulled under the water. I joined the struggle the dancers were facing in these conditions and it’s my hope that the audience can share in this experience as well.”

With the dancers positioned at the center of this force of nature – costumed in recycled ocean plastics from Allison Ozeray – By the Sea offers a poignant statement of a fragile future that’s ours to secure.

By The Sea was premiered with Nowness as part of their picks programme for Earth Day April 2023. The work has since won multiple awards and been accepted to many international film festivals, most recently winning Best Dance Film at the Global Short Film Awards in Cannes.

“The rhythms of the sea run through all of it, both of you, beautifully, with hints of the movements of different inhabitants of the waves as well as the waves themselves; are they 'by the sea' or from the sea? - it felt like a return at the end; lyrical and a little melancholy (which I loved); a tidal feel. Assured, mesmerising, poignant.” - Pippa Marriot (audience member)

“Very poetic and Serene and yet filled with so much sadness. Beautifully danced by the both of you” -  Subhash 'Viman' Gorania (audience member)

“For the best part of 9 months I spent almost every day in the water. It became a sanctuary and place of intense healing for me. I started to understand the power of the ocean as a giver and taker of life; its beauty alongside its danger if not respected.” -Edd Arnold
